It pains me to write this post but it’s a matter of life and death for a follower of mine. She is 17-years-old and living in an abusive situation. She has parents that won’t accept her Islamic apostasy, who hit her, who know she cuts herself but don’t care enough to get her help. She can’t leave…

Updates: I am waiting for Tah to get online. She does not have Internet access because her parents bar her from using the Internet, listening to music, watching TV, etc. She can only access the Internet from school or on her iPhone (which she only has so her parents can keep tabs on her- she isn’t allowed to be anywhere but school or home).

So many kind strangers have reached out with resources. Someone posted the post on Reddit. Bebe Zeva reblogged it. I’ll be forwarding the emails to Tah and talking to her about what she wants to do tonight. The goal is to get Tah out of this situation soon (more than likely a shelter/group home), maybe even tomorrow if we can. It’s a huge step for her to take but it’s a necessary step.

Thank you so much for caring. Thank you for signal boosting. This means so much to Tah. I will update you guys more when I talk to her.

Things I failed to express to be able to fit/express:

Priviledge, Cultural Tourism, and “expanding one’s horizons”

The role Urban Fiction can play/plays in modern literature

Chuck D’s maxim that “Rap is the CNN of the Ghetto” (so frequently misquoted, I have no idea what the original is) and what that means for Urban Fiction

A joke about the cast of The Wire on one of those charts of Dungeons & Dragons alignments.

Sex in the novels covered so far in Year of Genre (which I’m now saving for Erotica month)

Gender in True to the Game

How I still can not deal with any textual utterance of the N-word being it written, spoken, or sung

How I may just have a problem with Omniscient POV overall as the writing in Lonesome Dove made me put the book down 200 pages in, as nothing had happened and I didn’t give a shit about much of what I had learned and the POV drove me insane.

what does fatwas and fanboys mean

what does fatwas and fanboys mean:

Anonymous asked: what does fatwas and fanboys mean

A fatwa is an Islamic ruling made by either a self-appointed sheik-officer bro or a legitimate religious authority. A fanboy is a male-identified person who is a fan of something or someone. Fatwas and fanboys thus signifies male condemnation and male validation. For better or worse, fatwas and fanboys come with the territory of being a woman.

I’d never before thought about what the title of Safy’s blog meant. Now I know. And I’m in awe.

EDIT: Which, frankly, given what’s said by her above, she shouldn’t give two shits about other than the admiration of a friend.

safy's blog: In Which I Squee About This Recording

safy's blog: In Which I Squee About This Recording:
fatwasandfanboys:

You know what’s really fun, meeting someone, getting to know them a little and watching them be awesome.

That’s what I think of whenever I read something Safy posted. She found me a long time ago on this internets, started working with other people who at the time told me her to follow me, and we got to talking a bit. And well, Safy is awesome. And she stirs shit up pretty well, and it works, because she’s unafraid to stand up and be counted. And she’s a good writer, person and thinker.

And this is a good piece, I really like it. Read it at her blog and then scroll through all of it. I take breaks from Tumblr these days, not checking my dashboard for weeks at a time, the first thing I do when I come back, every time is to read Safy and see what she’s up to.

kimannjosouth:

Send your creative writing to WHOLE BEAST RAG. Their deadline for submissions is MAY 1st. Get on it!

One of my fellow Bitter Enemies (our book can still be bought here) Katherine Hargreaves is co-Editor-in-Chief of Whole Beast Rag. They’re looking for submissions, here’s what they have to say about themselves:

MISSION:

Wild at heart and woven from blood, Whole Beast Rag is a literary magazine, dialogue, and culture collaboration. Produced by Grace Littlefield and Katharine Hargreaves and based out of Bemidji & Minneapolis, Whole Beast Rag is dedicated to publishing provocative ideas from emerging and established writers and artists everywhere.

Whole Beast Rag envisions itself a breeding ground for sexy intellectuals and a playground for the daring-minded. We publish work that investigates issues of cultural relevance through creative or challenging methods. We seek to probe all angles. In doing this, we deepen the conversation that ultimately unites thought and art through theory, nonfiction essays, interviews, fiction, poetry, and profiles. We go deep into the wet heart of our times and examine the seething center.

Published quarterly, Whole Beast Rag is primarily an online magazine with a print anthology published annually and featuring the best of the best. Combining equal parts literary endeavor, scholarly journal, and culture review, our sensibility is informed by the creative space we desire to create: where the sacred and profane share the same home while honoring the ideas and people between these extremes. We are interested in transmissions of lives lived bravely and free. Our approach is experimental, exploratory, and engaging: every expression is welcome here.

Our magazine is structured thematically, with each issue revolving around a central idea. This lends each a unique flavor that informs and inspires the conversations and collaborations that are integral to our mission. More importantly, it challenges the shifting lens and perspectives through which we navigate and narrate our unfolding world. Contributing writers, while encouraged, are not held to this rule. Read more about our line-up of upcoming themes here.

As a collaborative organization, Whole Beast Rag invites artists, writers, and other creative organizations/endeavors to participate in single-issue ventures that subvert expectations or otherwise traditional/typical experiences of a literary magazine. Our words build worlds.

Whole Beast Rag welcomes queries and collaborations with artists and organizations at inquiries@wholebeastrag.org

So, submit, people. Submit to Whole Beast Rag.

"Having an identical ancestor of the main character’s 20th century husband—the aforementioned evil,..."

“Having an identical ancestor of the main character’s 20th century husband—the aforementioned evil, rapey, gay man—who has the hots for her in the 18th century was highly offensive to me. It was used as a device to allow the main character to overcome her feelings of guilt by falling in love with another man. And all the men seem to have a touch of rapeyness to them, it’s just that they make this one evil, you know, because he likes men.”

-
Paper Darts: ART LIT - Blog - Josh and The Outlander break up

Part of my article at Paper Darts.

I kind of wanted to go over this again because this keeps coming up in my mind as being a more and more vile, and I initially left this continued exposition out of the PD piece.

I said in the article the book lacked subtly and subtext, I see now that I may have been wrong. It’s just not what one would go looking for in a book.

The book’s main antagonist is a gay/bi, sadistic doppleganger of the female protagonist’s heterosexual husband (who may have been unfaithful during the war and who can not produce an offspring).

The female protagonist and male protagonist are both essentially lust objects of this man. The male protagonist has been savagely whipped in public by the man and propositioned. The female was likewise propositioned and abused, but not in public.

The male protagonist at one point whips and dominates his wife in a way that is portrayed as an erotic scene, wherein they talk about their feelings later on and still love each other and both agree it was a bad thing that happened but basically had to happen.

So…the model of the book is a heterosexual marriage of political convenience in which the modern day woman submits to her new man and they learn to love each other.

Another time traveler is shown and she’s “stronger” as a woman than the protagonist but goes so far as to kill her husband and be arrested for being a witch, basically allowing the protagonist to get drawn into it until she’s rescued by her husband.

And the biggest threat to their marriage is of course, her real marriage, as represented by a sexual deviance.

I’m honestly not trying to read into it. Some of this stuff bugged me when I read it, but I couldn’t put my finger on why.

Now I know.

nedhepburn:

One person asked about the Bush-Gore case, where the Supreme Court had to determine the winner of the election.

“Get over it,” Scalia said of the controversy surrounding it, to laughter from the audience.“

Scalia reminded the audience it was Gore who took the election to court, and the election was going to be decided in a court anyway—either the Florida Supreme Court or the U.S. Supreme Court.

It was a long time ago, people forget…It was a 7-2 decision. It wasn’t even close,” he said.
”

-
ThinkProgress

Today’s edition of “Fuck You, Guy,” starring Anton Scalia.

It was 5-4, dumbass. Not 7-2.

And I am over it.

And I have no idea how the question from the audience was framed, but it’s a valid thing to talk about since It’s a Fucking Landmark Supreme Court Case. Whether or not Gore did take it to the court doesn’t even matter.

"Chabon takes inspiration from 19th-century masters such as Charles Dickens, whose work combined..."

“
Chabon takes inspiration from 19th-century masters such as Charles Dickens, whose work combined social realism with crime fiction, ghost stories, and anything else that struck their fancy.

“The reasons why it changed are bad reasons,” he says. “They’re economic and financial and marketing reasons, and they have to do with snobbery and academic laziness.”

Still, he does see signs that things are improving.

“You look at the most recent novels by Colson Whitehead, Gary Shteyngart, Rick Moody, Cormac McCarthy. There’s almost been a little floodlet of so-called ‘literary’ writers either embracing or circling around clear literary genres.”
”

-
Michael Chabon Attacks Prejudice Against Science Fiction | Underwire | Wired.com

Delayed auditory feedback, or DAF, devices have been used to help stutterers for decades. If a stutterer hears his own voice at a slight delay, stuttering often improves. But if a non-stutterer uses a DAF device designed to help stutterers, he can start stuttering — and the effect is more pronounced if the delay is longer, up to a certain point.”

-
New Video Shows Japanese Speech-Jamming Gun in Action | Underwire | Wired.com
